According to Fox 35 Orlando, officers spoke to one of the store owners, who told them that they were unaware it was illegal to sell human bones in Florida, adding that they had been trading the items for years.

"She confirmed that the store had multiple human bone fragments, all purchased from private sellers, and mentioned she has documentation for these transactions but could not provide it at that moment," an arrest affidavit read, per the outlet. "She described the bones as genuine human remains and delicate in nature."

Officials then said they met the store owner, Schopper, who claimed the bones were "educational models," which under state law would protect their sale.

However, per the outlet, authorities stated it was likely that the cranium and the skull fragment were archaeological finds, with one bone likely to be over 100 years old and another likely to be more than 500 years old.

Schopper was reportedly arrested on Thursday, April 10, and released the following day from theVolusia CountyJail on a bond of $7,500. The investigation is still ongoing as of the time of publication.
