Oscars are the most revered and sought-after award in the film industry. Even to be nominated for an Academy Award is a great achievement, let alone win one.

However, some movies are such embodiments of cinematic excellence that they bag the highest honor of the filmmaking realm in several categories. It will surely be a surprise to many, but the most Oscars ever won by a movie is 11, and three movies have done so in the 96 years of awards. And no, it’s not Titanic.

It is quite a complex task to rank masterpieces that the Academy highly acclaims. But here is an attempt to do just that.

First on the list is the movie with the highest Oscar wins of the 21st century. The epic conclusion to Peter Jackson’s masterful adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels, Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King took home eleven trophies at the 76th Academy Awards in 2004. It was nominated in eleven categories and won in all of them. These included best picture, director, adapted screenplay, editing, set decoration, costume design, makeup, original score, original song, sound mixing, and visual effects.

James Cameron’s romantic take on the tragic fate of the RMS Titanic became the highest-grossing film of all time at its release. And even though the film’s box office success has been replicated and outdone, there is yet to be a film to outdo Titanic’s success at the 70th Academy Awards in 1998.
